Get authorisation from HMRC to use Onvio

Before you begin

You will need to have an Agent Services Account set up with HMRC for the purpose of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT.

Apply for authorisation

Onvio is compatible with MTD for VAT but you will need to apply for HMRC's authorisation for your firm to use Onvio for this purpose.

You can use Onvio to get this authorisation from HMRC. The status of your HMRC authorisation is then displayed in Onvio, making it easier to monitor and apply for renewal.

  1. In Onvio Centre, select Setup > Firm Settings from the menu bar.
  2. Select the MTD tab.
  3. Select Add from the toolbar.
  4. Enter your Agent Reference Number and Description, then select Next.

Note: You will have received an Agent Reference Number when you set up your Agent Services Account (ASA) with HMRC for the purposes of MTD for VAT.

  5. Select Authorise.
  6. Read the HMRC privacy notice then, if you agree to the terms, select Continue.
  7. Take the following steps in the HMRC web page.
    1. Sign in with the correct Government Gateway account associated with your Agent Services Account.
    2. Enter the six digit access code that HMRC will send to your mobile phone, landline, or other device.
    3. Confirm your identity to HMRC.
    4. Grant authority for Onvio to interact with HMRC on your behalf.
  8. When you have completed HMRC's authorisation procedure, select Done. The Status of this Agent Reference Number should now be shown as Authorised.

Note: Each authorisation from HMRC will last for up to 18 months. After that, you will need to renew your authorisation.
